About the project (provided by the applicant)
In the early 20th century, the beaches of the Frische Nehrung (Vistula Spit) were popular with Königsberg residents. However, in the 1930s, the area was closed off for the construction of a Luftwaffe airbase. Today, the spit has reclaimed its role as a recreational retreat, though the airfield ruins remain a contentious cultural legacy. One of the project's goals was to neutralize the area’s negative associations. The vision is to transform the area into an «island of escape,» where visitors experience a secluded environment governed by a different set of rules. The conceptual approach, combining the requests for isolation and the reinterpretation of the military infrastructure facilities, introduces the idea of catharsis as an act of purification and renewal. The interior of the hangar is designed to resemble a theater. This allows to combine physical relaxation in baths with psychological release and contemplation. These «theatherms» serve as the heart of the complex, elevating leisure and rest into a collective experience.
