Uruk Museum: Where the First Words Were Written

Located in Uruk, Al-Muthanna, Iraq, the birthplace of the world's first writing system, the museum emerges from the earth, expressing the idea: born from this clay. Inspired by archaeological excavation, its form evokes the land cracking open to reveal its buried history. Mostly underground, with only its upper shell rising toward the Ziggurat, it preserves the monument's visual dominance, protects the archaeological landscape, and reduces heat gain. Its massing is inspired by cuneiform writing, while fractures resembling broken clay tablets bring daylight and natural ventilation. A reinterpretation of the traditional wind catcher and an Iraqi courtyard provide passive cooling, daylight, and circulation. Visitors arrive by traditional Mashoof boat, explore the evolution of writing through interactive exhibits, holograms, and VR, then continue to cultural activities across the site. A separate research wing supports archaeological research and conservation with independent access.
