Category Best Restoration or Reconstruction Project by Student
About the project (provided by the applicant) The business center consists of a new annex clad in limestone and a renovated historic building — the former “Savo-Karelian Wholesale Trade” building, which currently houses an abandoned warehouse. The main feature of the historic part is its load-bearing frame with columns that decrease in size on each floor. This building was one of the first Finnish prefabricated structures.
The visual code of the project is defined by the rhythm of vertical divisions tapering upwards. The façade of the historic building has floor-by-floor articulation with a unique rhythm of terracotta pilasters; the added floor is visually separated. The main entrance is located at the corner, at the intersection of pedestrian flows. The new volume is clad in limestone, and the rounded panels reveal the glass volume with the staircase.
Conference halls are located on the second and third floors, and the top floor houses a restaurant with a terrace. Offices on the first floor have separate street entrances. The building maintains the rhythm of the embankment, forms the street corner, and respects the scale of the surrounding development.
