Project
Battle on the Ice Diorama Museum: Architectural Concept

Nomination
Best Architectural Design for a Museum

About the project
The diorama museum with the total area of 1,300 m2 standing on the site of 1,700 m2 is dedicated to Alexander Nevsky’s victory over Teutonic Knights at the Chudskoye Lke in 1242. Monolith inclined walls symbolize shields of Russian knights, and slashes on them represent their heroism and endurance. The building is round in plan, referring to a fortress tower and traditional Orthodox symbol of universe origin. The moat along the perimeter of the building in combination with protruding wall pieces offers an association with broken ice, which, as the legend has it, got fractured under the feet of heavily armored Teutons.
