Project
Restoration and Conservation of Chesme Gallery in Gatchina Palace

Nomination
Best Implemented Restoration / Reconstruction Project

About the project
Before the World War II, the Chesme Gallery (V. Brenna, 1790s) was one of finest and the most solemn areas of the Gatchina Palace. The fire of 1944 burnt down the attic floor and the roof, destroyed the statues and plasterwork, and severely damaged ornaments and decorations. The 1970s saw a new floor deck and attic ceiling. The semicircular eastern wall and balcony also underwent restoration, but works on the Chesme Gallery’s interior weren’t even started. In 2017, experts of the “Renaissance of St. Petersburg” construction company developed a restoration project of the Chesme Gallery, which suggested a combination of conservation and partial reconstruction. The project was commissioned by the St. Petersburg Committee for Memorial Protection in 2018. The Chesme Gallery, denominated as the Hall of Remembrance of the Great Patriotic War of 1914—1945, opened for the public on May 7, 2019.
