A water tower in Novgorod region, constructed in 1908—1909 and restored in 2020, competes for a Golden Trezzini Award in the “Best Implemented Restoration / Reconstruction Project” category.
This picturesque water tower was built in Staraya Russa, Novgorod region, Russia, in the early XXth century and became one the town’s landmarks. Damaged badly during World War II and not restored properly afterwards, it got its second life only in 2020, when a young architect Andrey Barabanov implemented his reconstruction project. The work is nominated for a Golden Trezzini Award this year.
To keep and rearrange the historic construction for today’s use, the following was made:
- the lost 4th tier of the tower was reconstructed;
- a sight-seeing platform was arranged within the 4th tier;
- a tourist data center was arranged within the 1st tier;
- an exhibition gallery with modifiable exposition was arranged within the tower;
- brick masonry was restored;
- remaining elements of the metal staircase were restored;
- floors were finished with mettlach tiling to match the remaining sites;
- engineering and technical utilities necessary for safe operation of the tower were installed.

The Golden Trezzini website users are welcome to vote for their preferred projects via Facebook, giving them a chance to win Premio del Pubblico Award. 120+ projects from Argentina, Australia, Belarus, Brazil, Egypt, France, Japan, Iran, Italy, Latvia, Mexico, Montenegro, Norway, Oman, Portugal, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Serbia, Spain, the UAE, and the USA are approved for participation at the moment.
The International Golden Trezzini Awards for Architecture and Design are named after Domenico Trezzini (1670—1734), the first architect of St. Petersburg and the founder of Petrine Baroque. The Awards have been held since 2018. The motto of the Awards is “Architecture as Art.” The Awards are intended to acknowledge and promote architectural and designer projects that amount to works of art.
The Honorary Chairman of the International Council of the Awards is Mikhail Piotrovsky, General Director of the State Hermitage, St. Petersburg.
Entries for the Third International Golden Trezzini Awards for Architecture and Design can be submitted at www.goldtrezzini.ru/en/ till October 15, 2020. Participation is free of charge.
