About the project (provided by the applicant) For the production team, Franz Kafka’s metaphorical transformation serves as a pretext to tell their own story about inner freedom. In Andrey Goncharov’s stage version, Kafkaesque absurdity mixes with rich allusions to a wide range of artworks.
A small apartment becomes a space for the transformation of an entire family, where complex relationships with the father form the cornerstone of Gregor’s metamorphosis. The scenography is based on a white cubic pavilion, which develops alongside the protagonist’s transformations: it opens, breaks into parts, and changes shape, reflecting Gregor’s state. At pivotal points in the plot, large figures—“Finger of Fate” and “Mother’s Heart”—descend onto the stage along with the pavilion’s transformation, revealing new cultural and symbolic layers. By the finale, only a platform remains on stage, where the father, mother, and sister appear wearing headpieces inspired by Pieter Bruegel the Elder’s drawing “Beekeepers.”
