Restored tourist center in ancient Suzdal competes for the title of the “Best Implemented Restoration / Reconstruction Project”.
The history of Russian town of Suzdal dates back probably to 999 or 1024. With a population of just around 10,000, it has more than 40 historically important monuments and 200 architectural sites. Several of them are listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The ancient architecture of Suzdal attracts lots of visitors, making tourism the backbone of town’s economy.
The tourist center in Suzdal at the shore of the Kamenka River was built in 1980s, in the USSR times. The complex was to fit into the existing architectural appearance of the city, to match its monastery ensembles and the Kremlin. Initially, they intended to extend it to a large complex with a hotel, restaurants, a swimming pool, and all the necessary amenities like roads, utilities, and the bridge.
Almost 40 years later, the place was totally deteriorated and abandoned, but a restoration project by Yelena Makhrova Studio was realized in 2019. This year, the project is nominated for a Golden Trezzini Awards as “Best Implemented Restoration / Reconstruction Project”. The designer was challenged to breathe a new life into this once glamorous venue, retaining as much of its architectural elements as possible.
